Prevention before Panic

In a perfect world, you'd never have to experience the panic of losing your pet to begin with. Thankfully, there are steps you can take to protect your pet and prevent potential heartache.

Make sure your contact information is current with your microchip registry and with WCRAS-very important!

Introduce your pet to your neighbors! So many pets wander into a neighbor's yard if they if they get lost. Your neighbor can help get your pet back home if they know your pet.

Have current photos of your pets readily available-most of us have plenty of picture on our phone of our pets.

Spay and neuter your pets

  • Spaying and neutering your pets has a plethora of benefits. Not only helping to reduce pet homelessness, studies show that neutering will decrease sexual roaming in about 90% of cases
Pet-proof you home and yard
  • Check your fences and doors. If there is a way to get out of the yard or home, many animals will find it!
Leash up
  • Always keep your dogs on leash when going for walks or car rides. Anything can get their attention, and make a mad dash for the street.
Personal ID on the collar
  • Remember to keep information current on dog or cat ID tags!
  • WCRAS now offers Personal ID tags with a donation of $5 to the Injured Animal Fund.
Makes your your dog's license is current
  • By keeping your license current with WCRAS, you are helping keep current contact information on file to reunite your pet!
Register your pet's microchip with WCRAS for free!
  • Don't forget to keep your information current with the microchip company
    • If you don't' know the microchip company your chip is registered to, call WCRAS at 775-353-8901. they can help point you in the right direction!
  • Pet isn't microchipped? WCRAS offers FREE microchipping for all Washoe County residents.
Address behavioral and emotional issues
  • Always take extra precautions with fireworks and thunderstorms, as these loud noises often frighten dogs and cats to the point of panic.
  • Provide plenty of enrichment for your pet with attention, exercise, puzzles and toys.
